December 30: Two killed outside Rawalpindi Imambargah
Two police officials were gunned down while another policeman and a passerby were critically wounded at Dhok Syedan when four gunmen riding two motorcycles opened fire at them. The security officials had been deployed outside the Imambargah for providing security. Dawn
December 31: Blast damages shrine in Charsadda
The outer wall of the shrine of Baba Sahib was damaged in an attempt to blow up the historic site. Explosive materials planted at outside the building by unknown persons. No casualties were reported in the attack. Daily Times
January 1: Attack on pilgrims’ bus in Quetta
At least three people were killed and 31 others were injured in a suicide car bomb attack on a bus carrying Shia pilgrims to Quetta. The attack took place in the Akhtarabad area on the outskirts of Quetta.
The attack took place when an explosives-laden car rammed into the bus as it passed by. Most of the passengers were Shia pilgrims returning from Iran. Members of the police as well as the Anti-Terrorism Force were escorting the bus when it was attacked. Express Tribune
January 2: Girls’ school bombed in Landikotal
Militants blew up a primary school in Jamrud in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Armed men planted the explosives inside the two-room building of Said Akbar Kali Girls School in Bakarabad. No one was present inside the school at the time of the explosion. Dawn
January 2: Shia activist shot dead in Khairpur
A Shia activist was shot dead outside a mosque in the Godu Shop area. Syed Ahsan Shah, 28, was sprayed with bullets by a group of assailants riding two motorbikes when he came out of the mosque.
Leaders of various Shia organisations gave a call for a city-wide shutdown for the next day as well as announcing three days of mourning. Dawn
January 2: Bomb damages school in Charsadda
A state-run girls’ school was partially damaged in an explosion after unidentified persons planted explosives near its boundary wall. The attack, which took place in Dhub Banda, occurred early in the morning and damaged the gate and boundary wall of the school. The News
January 3: Two Sunni leaders killed in Islamabad
Gunmen killed two senior members of a Sunni group in a rare attack in the capital. The secretary general of the Islamabad chapter of the Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) organisation, Mufti Muneer Muavia, and his colleague Qari Asad Mehmood were targeted in a residential area bordering the twin city of Rawalpindi. January 3: 15 injured in Chakwal Sectarian clash
As many as 15 people were injured in a sectarian clash in Pinwal village of Chakwal. Later, hundreds of Shia Muslims gathered to protest against the police’s alleged indifference.
The clash occurred following several weeks of legal tussle regarding the planned route of a procession being carried out by Shias. On the day of the procession, activists from the Ahle Sunna Wal Jamaa (ASWJ) allegedly ambushed the march and pelted participants with stones. Dawn
January 4: Five killed in sectarian attacks
Five people were killed in two separate “tit-for-tat” sectarian attacks in the port city of Karachi.
In the first incident, more than half a dozen armed riders attacked a roadside juice shop and killed three young Shia men, as well as wounding four others.
Just four hours after the midnight assault, two young brother students of Madrassah Ahsan-ul-Uloom, were attacked when traveling to the seminary. The killings sparked anger amongst the students of the Madrassah Ahsan-ul-Uloom, who took to the roads and blocked them by burning tyres in protest. Dawn
