Pakistan womens’ team wins gold medal at Asian Games
Date: September 26, 2014
Pakistan retained the women’s Twenty20 cricket gold medal at the Asian Games by defeating Bangladesh in a rain-affected final. The defending champions won in a thrilling finish after picking up five wickets in the final two overs. Pakistan had struggled after having won the toss and elected to bat, putting up only 97-6 in their allocated 20 overs, their young star Bismah Maroof top-scoring with 24. The match was reduced to seven overs after the rain, and Bangladesh had been cruising to victory when captain Sana Mir bowled a crucial over, picking up two wickets. Pakistan’s women’s team has enjoyed a professional status from the country’s cricket authorities, for less than a decade, during which time it has won the Asian gold twice. Express Tribune
